Better Mobile Photos - SMartphone Photography Training

Video Five

Video

Photos of loved ones are precious and regarded as our most valued possessions. They are a great memory jogger and allow us to re-live that holiday or special experience. Watching a video involves using more senses to evoke those memories.

On a personal note – take video of your loved ones. After my mother passed away, we were devastated to discover that we do not have any video of her. This is regrettably a missed opportunity to help us remember her voice, personality and her interactions with her loved family.

Photos are fantastic, however, they are a split moment in time. We no longer have the issue of data storage that was previously cost prohibitive and impractical. There is no excuse for not capturing snippets of video to accompany our photos. I know, some of us do not like getting in front of the video. We need to get over it! and I mean that in a nicest way. Go buy a selfie stick and be proud to jump in photos with your family.

Alright, back to video... When we capture photos and create images, we are communicating a story. The viewer inherently and subconsciously searches for meaning. They rely on their own knowledge, experiences and initial emotional reaction to interpret the story. Viewers of the same image or piece of art may draw completely different conclusions. Video provides a definitive narrative allowing you to re-live an experience long after your memory would have faded.

Challenge time!

No challenge - just get out there and practise. Enjoy photography. It does not need to be perfect. It is about you slowing down and looking for the beauty in everyday things. Once you start to experience how much fun mobile photo editing apps are - you will be completely hooked and as passionate as the rest of us.

Just to recap…

  • Just like photos - make sure you capture video of yourself for your loved ones
  • Stabilise the phone and move slowly when following a subject
  • Keep updating the software - to receive new features and capabilities. It's like getting a new camera!
  • Check the default settings are set to record at the appropriate resolution
  • Maintain situational awareness when capturing video
YAY - We made it to the end!
